Writing and Technology
This is actually something that is going to be in my research paper, but I wanted to talk about it. I'm doing my paper on the McDonaldization of society... It relates to technology in that it also controls people unknowingly. One way it does this is through making the consumer an unpaid laborer. When I read this, it made me think more about that because I had never thought of myself as such.

But it makes sense. When we walk into a McDonald's (let's say we're dining in instead of drive-thru) we have to walk up to the counter ourselves instead of having someone come serve us. We order our food and get a piece of paper with a number on it that someone will scream when it's time to retrieve the food. There are no waiters here. In some fast food places we are just given the bare minimums of the meal and have to put on our own lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup, and what not. We usually have to retrieve our own drinks. Then when the meal is over, we have to bus our own tables.

I don't have a problem doing anything of those things, but it's interesting how things can have a hold over us like that and we don't even realize it. And then you think of how corporations like the fast food industry and gas stations and retail and whoever benefit from this, because it requires less labor on their part. And payroll is one of the first things most corporations will cut, so I'm sure it generates more profit for the company at the cost of the consumer.

true true

It does allow the company to have less labor on hand to reduce labor costs. However, when you compare the price of goods at a mcdonalds to a restaurant where you are served the difference is astronomical. So those savings are also passed onto the consumers.
